As much as it pains me to do it, I'm switching off anonymous commenting on this journal. I've just returned from a week away and I see you've all taken it upon yourselves to offer me Thai kick-boxing equipment, weight control mints, permanent laser hair removal (but I'll have that laser off you if possible, thanks) and escorts for my next visit to London. As much as I appreciate it I don't really need any of these, and I honestly can't think which of you good people might be spamming me so thoughtfully and conscientiously with services you believe I just might need.

Apart from that, a short while ago this journal also received a couple of vicious anonymous comments definitely from [livejournal.com profile] winterfox, a certifiably pathetic troll who presents herself as an attention-seeking and toxic science fiction fan from Thailand, the only person who has ever directed personal abuse at me on Live Journal, whose faux outrage is transparent enough to be laughable, and who consistently thinks book discussion communities are appropriate places to employ the tactics of a playground bully. Nothing will ever be called a meaningful critique if it's been typed by her.

Hence I'm now regrettably switching on the logging of IP addresses as well. Who needs this shit, honestly.

Since the day Miles was born we have lovingly referred to him as Mr. Miles, because as far as we're concerned he has always been a very cool kid.

When we Skype, Miles sits in front of my wife's laptop and bashes the keys like any curious 8 month-old would do. This morning on Skype, my wife said Mr. Miles wants to send me an e-mail. It arrived eventually, from my wife's e-mail address, with the words 'LOVE DADDDDDDD'.

But about ten seconds before it arrived I also received spam from a 'Mr. Miles':

...informing me that a recently deceased family member (which presumably could only be my mother) has left me 6 million quid, which Mr. Miles will forward to me in exchange for phone/fax numbers and a forwarding address to send the huge bundle of cash after filing all the necessary LEGAL documents. Look, just send me the money, okay?

I've read a bit about Skype security, eavesdropping and encryption, but I have a question for the techheads on my FL: is it possible for an eavesdropped Skype call to employ voice-to-text software and generate immediate spam this way, or is this just a massively unlikely coincidence?

[livejournal.com profile] dougs mentioned something along these lines yesterday: I've had some spam that has been sent out from my @livejournal.com messaging address returned, and then forwarded to my usual address.* This indicates that my LJ address is being used to send spam; also, recently in my inbox I've had plenty of spam addressed in a way that indicates it's been sent after some contact with my LJ. So I'm disabling my LJ messaging until it all goes away. As I have no idea how long that will be, if you need to contact me you'll find my details at this friends-locked post.

* The address that presumably bounced my LJ messaging spam is similar to a bunch of other Japanese addresses which regularly spam my usual address, which then indicates that the spambots responsible are now spamming each other, and hopefully, like me, are also getting rather pissed off about it.

The Scottish Hare Krishna spam that has been going around for several years has finally reached my inbox:

Call out Gouranga be happy!!!
Gouranga Gouranga Gouranga ....
That which brings the highest happiness!!

Not trying to sell anything, just three lines of chanting. Wikipedia even has an entry, as does Urban Dictionary.

I rarely (if ever) click on spam, but I was curious how "Domingo Hancock" was going to try and sell me a spam filter.

Calling me Marylou is not a good start. )

My e-mail accounts are back. Took 'em three days to fix the problem over a Bank Holiday weekend, but what can you expect when you don't pay for it?

It's also time to total up last month's spam... another big fall: 933, compared to April's 1,374 and March's 2,794. Please explain, someone. I never received a reply from Macunlimited when I enquired if they had recently installed spam filters, so I shall simply have to ask again.

Also, paging [livejournal.com profile] coalescent: Tun on Thursday? I still have a certain dodgy video, squire...

For the last year I've been keeping a log of the monthly amount of spam I've received at my previous (now unused) e-mail address, since I only really started getting spam at the beginning of last year. April 2003 that address saw a grand total of 41, and this increased monthly until March 2004 when I received 2,794. Still tiny by [livejournal.com profile] the_magician's standards, but as of the end of the month yesterday, April's incoming spam actually fell by more than half to 1,374, and I've done nothing at all to stem the tide.

It will no doubt rise again, but has anyone else been similarly fortunate?
